Urban NEXUS Case Story: Cities Without HungerA Community Garden Project to End São Paulo’s Poverty Cycle
In 2003, the São Paulo NGO Cidades Sem Fome launched the Community Gardens Project to enhance local self-sufficiency and sustainability, improve food security of vulnerable urban residents, provide employment opportunities, raise nutritional awareness, create green spaces, and foster waste management and recycling. In line with the Urban NEXUS approach, the NGO draws on existing institutional frameworks and collaborates with stakeholders from a variety of sectors.
The Urban NEXUS project 2013-2014 was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). ICLEI, as implementing partner of the Urban NEXUS project, is responsible for the content of this case story.
