Urban NEXUS Case Story: The Edible Schoolyard
An Educational Seed-to-Plate System for the Students and the CommunityFounded in Berkeley, California, in 1995, the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley (ESY) initiative developed a “seed-to-plate” educational curriculum centered around the facility’s garden and kitchen classroom. ESY is an example of a food-health-education NEXUS that empowers students, educators, and the community to make healthy and sustainable lifestyle choices.
The Urban NEXUS project 2013-2014 was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). ICLEI, as implementing partner of the Urban NEXUS project, is responsible for the content of this case story.
