Open letter to the INC-5 Chair
The Coalition has launched an open letter to the Chair of the INC5 negotiations, highlighting the importance of recognizing the role of local and sub-national governments in the success of the Plastic Pollution Treaty. Despite having fewer resources and less decision-making power than central governments, these local actors are directly responsible for waste management, recycling and pollution prevention efforts. The coalition argues that without their full involvement, the treaty risks being ineffective in addressing plastic pollution. Drawing on past experience with global environmental agreements such as the Paris Agreement, the Coalition advocates for key changes to the text of the treaty to ensure that local governments are integral to its implementation.
