Ending Plastic Pollution in Small Islands and Remote Coastal Areas
Small islands and remote coastal communities (SICs) face severe plastic pollution from both local waste and ocean currents. Despite challenges, SICs have developed innovative, locally adapted solutions like improved collection systems, plastic bans, and legislative reforms. Key barriers remain, including limited recycling infrastructure, lack of alternatives, and financing gaps. Addressing legacy plastics, enhancing disaster resilience, and empowering communities are crucial. Continued research is needed to develop scalable, sustainable solutions for SICs.
