Know-how to Enable Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging

The EPR Toolbox was developed by the PREVENT Waste Alliance and is a collection of internationally relevant knowledge on the topic of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging. It aims to promote knowledge exchange and enhance development of EPR systems worldwide. The EPR Toolbox contains various training materials which, among other things, explain how an EPR system can be established, possible financing mechanisms, how the informal sector can be involved in sustainable waste management, and how citizens can be incentivized to separate packaging. Practical country examples and a set of FAQs offer a more in-depth understanding of the complex issue of EPR. The toolbox was created in consultation with international practitioners, including PREVENT members and partners in Ghana and Indonesia.

The PREVENT Waste Alliance serves as a platform for exchange and international cooperation. Organizations from the private sector, academia, civil society and public institutions jointly engage for a circular economy. The PREVENT members contribute to minimizing waste, eliminating pollutants and maximizing the reutilization of resources in the economy worldwide. They strive to reduce waste pollution in low- and middle-income countries and work together for the prevention, collection, and recycling of waste, as well as the increased uptake of secondary resources. The PREVENT Waste Alliance was launched in 2019 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
