Rosario, Argentina: Urban Agriculture as a Force for Renewal
Circle City Scan Tool Case StudyIn 2001, Rosario, Argentina, was faced with unemployment and food security crises following the collapse of its industrial economy. In an effort to simultaneously tackle poverty and food insecurity, the city collaborated with local, national, and international NGOs to create its highly successful Urban Agriculture Program (UAP), which provides equipment, training, and other support to urban farmers. Concerted efforts from the municipality helped the project grow, with urban farms eventually providing fresh fruit and vegetables to around 40,000 of the city’s inhabitants.
