An Urban and Industrial Environmental Management Program Facilitates Institutional Integration for Productive Resource Management

In the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, economic growth and the expansion of the tourism industry led to worsening environmental challenges, including degradation of water, air, and soil quality. In response, coordination between the Mexican and German governments led to the creation of the Urban and Industrial Environmental Management Program (PGAUI) in 2010. PGAUI facilitates accountability, coordination, and knowledge-sharing across different levels of government and municipal departments, as well as between technical experts, officials, and private actors in the areas of integrated waste management and environmental protection.

The Urban NEXUS project 2013-2014 was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). ICLEI, as implementing partner of the Urban NEXUS project, is responsible for the content of this case story.
