Urban NEXUS Case Story: Water Sector Audit

Efficient Use of Water and Energy Resources in One of India’s Largest Metropolises

In 2005, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) conducted a water sector audit to identify opportunities to increase efficiency in the system. Implementation of the resulting recommendations was enabled by a cost-sharing mechanism, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), an urban renewal scheme funded by India’s national government. Following improvements, Nagpur’s water sector was able to increase efficiency of water supply use and distribution; there were also monetary savings from more efficient energy and water usage.

The Urban NEXUS project 2013-2014 was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). ICLEI, as implementing partner of the Urban NEXUS project, is responsible for the content of this case story.
