Description
In today’s world, the vast majority of economies are linear. Linear economies follow a “take, make, waste” model: resources are extracted from the environment (take), used as inputs for infrastructure and production (make), then discarded after their use period (waste). Local governments are now increasingly at the forefront of dealing with the negative impacts of linear economies. Indeed, waste management has become a growing burden for municipal governments and pollution and resource extraction are leading to resource insecurity.
The circular economy offers a framing through which to plan and implement actions that address these challenges. However, how cities can build a circular economy can seem complex and perplexing. The Circular City Actions Framework was developed by ICLEI, Circle Economy and Metabolic to introduce cities to the range of strategies and actions available to them as they work towards circular development at the local level. This framework is being integrated in an online tool for cities to adapt it to their local needs and context.
The interventions suggested by the framework reflect a variety of local government functions, including awareness raising, urban planning, public service delivery, public investment, asset management, regulating and policy-making. As such, the Framework can be used as an action planning and stakeholder engagement tool by city practitioners.
Objectives of the session
In this session, ICLEI, Circle Economy and Metabolic will introduce the Actions Framework and how to best use it. The thematic focus of the workshop will be on food systems and is exclusively for African city practitioners eager to learn more about implementing circular economy strategies for food in their jurisdictions and exchange with their peers.
Workshop participants will also be introduced to different tools and resources to implement the Actions Framework in their city.
